Samaritans

People talk to us any time they like, in their own way and off the record – about whatever’s getting to them. They don’t have to be suicidal. Whatever you’re going through, whether it’s big or small, don’t bottle it up. We are here for you if you’re worried about something, feel upset or confused, or just want to talk to someone. Before you say anything – Samaritans

One of our newest volunteers, Sheldon, shares what he learnt during training.

Make sure the person is comfortable and feels like they have space to talk, then just listen to what they have to say.

Sheldon says: ‘Hi my name’s Sheldon and I volunteer at the Croydon branch of Samaritans and whenever I’m with friends and family and they need to chat I recall on my volunteering experience and I sit them down with a nice warm cup of tea and before I say anything I just listen to what they have to say’.

It’s just about being there – Samaritans

Samaritans volunteer Emma, reminds us that we shouldn’t be thinking about what advice to give, or how to find a solution. When listening to someone, the most important thing is just to be present.

Emma says: “Hi I’m Emma I’m from the Wakefield branch and my Wednesday wisdom is that it’s not about having advice or having a solution to something, it’s just about being there and listening .”

January can be a difficult month. James, Samaritans volunteer from Wakefield reminds us to take time to reach out to friends who you know may be finding it hard.

On the 21 January, Samaritans are encouraging people to get together, join in and reach out. Take part in #BrewMonday, because tea and a chat can make you feel better and beat #bluemonday.

Join Brew Monday today https://www.samaritans.org/media-centre/our-campaigns/brew-monday

James says, “Hi I’m James from the Wakefield branch, we know that January can be a difficult month for a lot of people if you are worried about a friend that seems to be withdrawn or that your aren’t hearing from as often then please reach out to them and just ask how are you”.
